SOPLEY PYO DISPLAY MAY 2024
I was also able to do the small pop-up display at Sopley PYO. This was a last-minute idea to have a display on a site aircraft flew from on D-Day. Also, as far as I am aware Floyd Blair a pilot who flew on that day, is still alive at 103.As it was a last minute idea and advertising was only done on Facebook attendance was not huge.
However, I did make contact with a group of women who have given me contacts for the propeller blade from a crashed USA bomber and a possible source of a roll of Sommerfield tracking. Due to its fragility due to ageing Sommerfield tracking
(basically Heavy Duty metal link mesh) is now very rare. The tracking was laid down to make a temporary runway. It was held down by T stakes a rusty one is shown in the photo below.
You can also see the tracking in the information sheet on temporary runways in the next photo next to the PSP(Pierced Steel Planking) planking used for aircraft dispersal sites as it was more heavy duty.
